Radical Social Restructuring
Radical Social Restructuring: 2011 – 2015
2011 through 2015 will be a time of great activity and change. The world will go through a restructuring that is likely to be very dramatic. This is reflected by a planetary pattern of seven squares* between Uranus in Aries and Pluto in Capricorn which will occur over a five year period. These squares signal that it is time for the next evolutionary step in a cycle that began in the 1960’s and will continue until 2104.
The cycle to which I am referring is that of Uranus and Pluto. The cycle starts when Uranus and Pluto form a conjunction** and continues until they form their next conjunction. The entire cycle takes about 127 years***. The Uranus-Pluto cycle brings energies of radical social restructuring that can take us by surprise. The conjunction plants the seeds of change and transformation that will grow, develop, unfold and continue to profoundly alter the world over the next 127 years as the energies evolve at various “crisis” points. The powerful qualities of Uranus and Pluto energies that merge and initiate a new cycle at the conjunction are listed below:
URANUS: individualism, independence, change, innovation, rebellion, freedom, defiance of authority, unpredictability, genius, innovation, technology, science, the cutting edge and at times fanaticism.
PLUTO: power, intensity, transformation, extremes, death/rebirth, breakdown, decay, fertilization, massive energy, that which is hidden or below the surface, mysteries and secrets.
From 2011 to 2015, we will experience the first crisis point in the cycle as Uranus and Pluto form a square to each other. It is time for the seeds planted at the conjunction to be strengthened, actualized and tested by facing obstacles and challenges. Uranus will be in Aries and Pluto will be in Capricorn. These are strong signs of action and manifestation. It is likely to be a fast paced and very dynamic period. Aries and Capricorn both like to be in charge, and because they are in the challenging square configuration, they will be pushing and pulling against each other. That causes friction. At some point the energies can start making progress, but there is bound to be a lot of head butting at first between the Ram (Aries) and the Goat (Capricorn). Once these energies start working together and focusing on solutions, things can happen very rapidly.
Although these are dramatic energies, do not fear them. It is part of a natural cycle and is very long-lasting in terms of a human life time. Even though our world will go through a big re-structuring over the next five years, we can work successfully with the energy. It may feel like a crisis at times and it won’t be easy, but think of it as an evolutionary process. In order to evolve we will be faced with challenges that must be met.
Here is a list of the dates of the seven squares of Uranus in Aries to Pluto in Capricorn that will occur between 2012 – 2015:
- June 24, 2012 @ 8°23′ Aries/Capricorn
- September 18, 2012 @ 6°57′ Aries/Capricorn
- May 20, 2013 @ 11°15′ Aries/Capricorn
- November 1, 2013 @ 9°26′ Aries/Capricorn
- April 21, 2014 @ 13°34′ Aries/Capricorn
- December 14, 2014 @ 12°36′ Aries/Capricorn
- March 16, 2015 @15°18′ Aries/Capricorn
To understand what types of issues with which we are apt to be dealing, we need to look at the seeds planted during the last conjunction……
Uranus Conjunct Pluto 1962-1969
The conjunction in the sixties brought a rebellion against “the Establishment”. Civil rights and the Vietnam War brought great divisions between people. Conformity, social mores and tradition underwent tremendous challenges as many in the younger generation felt compelled to “question authority” and unmask social contrivances and hypocrisy. Repressed energies erupted and a social revolution was launched. The urge for shock and upheaval was very strong and permeated society. Massive social protests were held. There were big steps taken in the quest for human rights. Technology also came into our lives as the number of computers escalated rapidly. Our current Internet was actually seeded in the 60’s as a way for government researchers to share their information. Here are a few of the events of this turbulent time:
- Social and Political Violence – Viet Nam war escalation, Race Riots all across the country, bombings, 1968 Democratic Convention riots, civil rights workers killed, Assassinations: Nov 1963- John F. Kennedy, Apr 1968- Martin Luther King Jr., Jun 1968- Robert F. Kennedy.
- International Relations – 1962: Cuban Missile Crisis, 1963: “Hotline” set up between White House and Kremlin, 1963: Above Ground Nuclear Testing Ban Treaty between USA and Soviet Union, 1964: Official start of Vietnam War, 1968: N. Korea seizes USS Pueblo, 1968: Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty initiated.
- Civil Rights, Human Rights and Anti-War Movements – Martin Luther King, Jr. “I Have a Dream” speech, women’s rights, women libbers, massive protest marches, draft burning, and bra burning. 1967: Thurgood Marshall becomes first black Supreme Court Justice.
- Government Programs enacted – 1964: Civil Rights Act, 1965: Voting Rights Act, 1965: Medicare and Medicaid, 1965: Higher Education Act (gov’t funding assistance for student loans).
- The Environment – Environmental activism begins with Rachel Carson’s 1962 book, “Silent Spring”, about the effects of pesticides on the environment and our health. The first Earth Day was in 1970.
- Health and Healing –Interest surged in natural health and alternative healing. Medicare enacted in July, 1965.
- Spiritual exploration – Exploration of other religions, the psychic realm, and altered states of consciousness through meditation, spiritual practices and, for some, drugs such as LSD.
- Counter Culture – “Turn on, tune in, drop out”, “Stick it to the Man”, “Do your own thing”, “Sex, drugs and rock and roll”.
- Quest for Peace and Love – Flower power, anti-war sentiments, free love, hippies, communes, “The Summer of Love” 1967, Woodstock 1969.
- Music: Bob Dylan (1964,The Times, They Are a changin’), All music by the Beatles (Beatlemania), Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, Roy Orbison, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Mama’s and the Papa’s, Simon and Garfunkul, Jim Morrison and the Doors, Led Zeppelin, Bee Gees.
- Movies: 1963-1970: The Great Escape, The Birds, Tom Jones, Dr. Strangelove or: How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb”, Failsafe, The Americanization of Emily, In the Heat of the Night, Cool Hand Luke, The Dirty Dozen, 2001: a Space Odyssey, Planet of the Apes, The Graduate, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Easy Rider, M*A*S*H.
- Television 1963-1970: My Favorite Martian, Addams Family, Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, Star Trek, That Girl, Mary Tyler Moore Show, Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In, Monty Python’s Flying Circus.
- Books Sex and the Single Girl by Helen Gourley Brown, The Feminine Mystique by Betty Freidan, A Gift of Prophecy by Ruth Montgomery, The Psychedelic Reader by Timothy Leary, Human Sexual Response by Masters and Johnston, Edgar Cayce, Sleeping Prophet by Jess Stearn, Linda Goodman’s Sun Signs by Linda Goodman, Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex But Were Afraid to Ask by David Reuben
Those of you that are in your 20’s and 30’s have grown up in a world that always included computers, cell phones, the Internet and technology in general. Most of the social issues above are now part of the mainstream. You are poised to be a big part of the changes that will occur over the next five years. Especially in the technology sector – and very likely in ways that we can’t yet imagine. Some of the social issues above that still grate on the nerves of the older generation are not as troublesome for you because you never lived in that world. You will be able to see things in a way that is not so influenced by the “way it used to be” and therefore you can come up with innovative ideas and solutions.
If you were born in the sixties, you are now in your 40’s and your time has come to be the leaders. Your generation’s job is to start to actualize the best of the seeds that were planted when you were born. Since you grew up with the shifting social circumstances that started in the sixties, many of the changes (civil rights, women’s rights, divorce, blended families, openness about sexuality, etc.) are second nature to you. There are still many changes needed, but you do not feel the need to keep fighting the old battles. You will be the leaders that take us to the next level.
If you were one of the young people who came of age in the sixties, you are in your 50’s and 60’s. Your generation’s job was to get things started. You did that with passion, idealism and a willingness to be a warrior against an established social inequities and repressions. Now, as the older generation, you can revisit your ideas and feelings with the maturity and wisdom gained from experience. You still have a valuable role to play, especially as an advisor and mentor. What Bob Dylan said in the 60’s will be true again from 2011-2015, “The Times They Are a Changin’ “.
If you are in your 70’s or older, your wisdom will be needed. Even though the world has changed dramatically, the basics of human nature remain the same. You have valuable knowledge to pass on. Your ability to look at life with the perspective of age and experience will be needed.
The years ahead will be exciting, challenging, unpredictable and full of potential. However, there is something we can count on – we’re all in this together and each of us has something valuable to contribute.
* Square – occurs when two planets as observed from earth are 90 degrees away from each other
**Conjunction – occurs when two planets as observed from earth are in the same sign and degree of the zodiac.
***The Uranus/Pluto cycle actually varies from 112 to 142 years due to the elliptical nature of Pluto’s orbit. 127 years is used as an average.
Addendum to Radical Social Restructuring: 2011 – 2015
In response to a question asking for information about the sign in which the conjunction of Uranus and Pluto took place in the 1960’s and the significance of that sign, I have added this information:
Pluto and Uranus were conjunct in the sign of Virgo in the 1960’s. That means the energy of the radical restructuring was expressed through the things that are ruled by Virgo, the qualities of Virgo and its ruler, Mercury.
Virgo rules: Medicine, health and healing, service to others, science, engineering, teaching, working conditions, order, craftsmanship, routine, employees, servants, humility and purity.
Virgo keywords: analytical, hardworking, careful, precise, helpful, critical, discriminating, fact-finding, scientific, exacting, detail oriented, seeks perfection, tendency to worry, mentally active, concerned with keeping the earth healthy.
Virgo is ruled by Mercury which represents the intellect, all forms of communication, information, teaching, writing, speaking, students, young people, schools, transportation and commerce.
Here are a few of the issues/events during the sixties that relate to Uranus and Pluto expressing their radical, freedom-seeking, rebellious and transformational energies through Virgo:
Civil Rights: A great upheaval occurred in the segment of our society that had been treated as slaves and servants, as second class citizens relegated to the back of the bus, segregated and humiliated. It’s appropriate that schools, students and transportation became the agents through which rebellion and a demand for change erupted.
Service: President Kennedy’s famous words in his inaugural address, “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.” The Peace Corps was also founded during this period.
Health and Healing: Alternative health and environmental concerns were major issues and have grown since that time. We make take them for granted now, but it was a big deal then and very challenging to the way things had always been done.
“Hippies”: It seems like Uranus turned the Virgo qualities of modesty and order upside down with free love, communal living and indiscriminate drug use. However, the Virgo ideals of service, health, healing others and the earth were very much in evidence.
Spirituality: Seeking perfection and Nirvana were strong themes at this time as young people explored other religions and various methods to reach what they hoped would be a higher and purer level.
Science and Technology: The Soviets were ahead of the US in space exploration as we began the sixties. In 1961, President Kennedy proposed that we use our resources and talents to land a man on the moon and return him safely to the earth by the end of the decade. Our space program took off (no pun intended). The USA landed the first man on the moon in 1969.
The development of computers and the beginning of the “Information Age” in the sixties started a world transformation that is growing ever more powerful. Telstar was the first satellite to relay television signals. The first computer video game was invented.
These are just some of the Virgo themed things that had a radical restructuring affect effect in the sixties and something to think about as we go through the changes in society coming up in 2011-2015.

Thank you for your comment Lillia, That is an excellent question! The conjunction of Uranus and Pluto in the 60’s was in the sign of Virgo. I don’t think the comments space will be adequate for discussing its significance, so I am writing a short article about it. I will post it later this month with the February Forecast…. Judy Joyce
